The Cable Problem
Every desk has the same problem: cables. Charging cables, data cables, audio cables — they multiply when you’re not looking. Cable management is either a $3 pack of adhesive clips that fall off in a week, or a $50+ elaborate under-desk tray system. There’s a middle ground, and two of China’s biggest accessory brands — UGREEN and Orico — both have magnetic solutions under $15.
I tested both for a month. Here’s how they compare.
The Contenders
UGREEN Magnetic Cable Clips (3-Pack) — ~$12
Three weighted magnetic clips with a minimalist cylindrical design. Each clip holds 1-2 cables and stays put on any magnetic surface (desk legs, monitor arms, PC case).
Orico MagLink Cable Organizer — ~$10
A flat magnetic bar with 5 silicone cable slots. Designed to sit on top of a desk or stick to a metal surface. Holds up to 5 cables at once.
Head-to-Head Comparison
| Feature | UGREEN Clips | Orico MagLink |
|---|---|---|
| Design | Minimal, invisible when cables are in place | Visible bar, intentional part of desk aesthetic |
| Cable capacity | 1-2 per clip (3 clips total: 3-6 cables) | 5 cables in one organizer |
| Magnet strength | Very strong — won’t slide even with thick braided cables | Moderate — can shift if cables are tugged |
| Surface options | Magnetic surfaces only | 3M adhesive included for non-magnetic surfaces |
| Cable insertion | Slide in from top — one-handed | Push into silicone slot — needs two hands |
| Best for | Hidden cable routing | Visible, intentional organization |
| Build quality | Excellent — aluminum body, silicone grip | Good — plastic bar, soft silicone inserts |
Daily Use Experience
UGREEN: The Set-and-Forget Solution
After a month, the UGREEN clips haven’t moved a millimeter. I have one on my monitor arm routing the display cable, one under my desk holding two charging cables at the ready position, and one on my PC case keeping headphone cables tidy.
The one-handed cable insertion is the killer feature. You grab a cable, pull it toward you, and it slides out. Push it back and it stays. No clips to open, no velcro to redo.
Best use case: Permanent cable routing you don’t want to think about.
Orico: The Desktop Organizer
The Orico bar is a different philosophy — it’s meant to be seen. The silicone slots hold cables firmly but not tightly, so cables slide through with moderate resistance. It works well for cables you frequently swap (charging different devices from one cable slot, for example).
The included 3M adhesive pad let me mount it to the side of a wooden desk. The magnet alone wasn’t strong enough to hold 5 thick braided USB-C cables reliably — with 3M it’s solid.
Best use case: Shared charging cables at a family desk or visible cable organization you want to look tidy.
What Neither Solves
Both organizers work great for cables that terminate at your desk. What they don’t solve is cable excess — the slack from a 2-meter cable when you only need 30cm. For that, you still need velcro ties or a cable winder. Consider these organizers layer one of your cable management strategy.
The China Brand Context
UGREEN and Orico are fascinating to compare. Both are Shenzhen-based companies that started as OEM/ODM manufacturers and built global consumer brands in roughly a decade:
- UGREEN (est. 2012): Known for charging accessories and cables. Their design language is industrial-minimal — gray, black, understated.
- Orico (est. 2009): Known for storage, hubs, and desk accessories. Their designs are more playful, with translucent plastics and visible branding.
Both represent the “generation 2.0” of Chinese consumer brands: original designs, decent packaging, Amazon availability with Prime shipping, and warranties that actually work.
Who Should Buy Which?
Get the UGREEN Clips if:
- You want cables hidden, not showcased
- You have metal desk legs, monitor arms, or a PC case to attach to
- You value one-handed operation
- You want something that disappears into the background
Get the Orico MagLink if:
- You’re organizing a shared charging station
- You have a wooden desk and need adhesive mounting
- You want to see your organization (it looks nice!)
- You swap cables frequently
Verdict
Novelty Score: 76/100 — Both are clever implementations of a simple idea. The UGREEN clips edge ahead for everyday use thanks to stronger magnets and one-handed operation. At these prices, you can afford to use both: UGREEN for hidden routing, Orico for visible organization.
Neither product will change your life, but for under $15, they’ll make your desk a noticeably nicer place to work. And that’s exactly the kind of practical novelty we’re here for.
